Story

" We are walking because we wish no one else will have to lose their dad." (to Pancreatic Cancer).  This is the simple explanation of our 9 year old daughter.

On Sunday 13 October 2019 we will be taking part in Pancare’s Perth Walk for Hope. We will be walking in memory of Norman Talavera.

In May 2018  Norman was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer.  Wrapped around a vein and an artery, the cancer was deemed 'unresectable' (not able to operate) and the only suggested treatment was a horrific chemo regime.   The Chemo put him to bed, and made him very, very sick.

He was 39 years old, a father of 4.  We had just found out we were expecting another baby.

Doctors were vague about life expectancy; but a look at the statistics were grim.  It was a truly frightening, difficult time of 'smoke and mirrors.' Nothing was as it seemed,  the doctors seemed to know more than they let on.  In that entire time Pancare gave us excellent support, honesty, and something a little bit different than the mainstream.  This was so vitally important to us then, and we are walking, in part, to say thank you.

The other reason we are walking is that there is so little new research or breakthroughs in the treatment of Pancreatic Cancer.  This is the heartbreaking bit. When you get a Pancreatic Cancer diagnosis there are no trials, innovations, or hopeful possibilities.  At least, none were presented to us, and we asked so many times.

Norman died 9 months after his diagnosis; our baby girl was just 30 days old.

** Some official info:  This year, over 3,599 people in Australia will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Out of all the major cancers, pancreatic cancer has one of the lowest survival rates with only an 9.8% chance of surviving at least 5 years. This must change – and with your support it can.

All donations will go towards Pancare Foundation’s patient support programs and funding into vital research in the fight against pancreatic, liver, biliary and foregut cancers.

Thank you, Ariana and family.
